Navigating the BT Switch Off
To ensure a seamless shift from traditional telephones to VoIP, Tel2 is here to help with this comprehensive guide.
What is the BT Switch Off?
The BT switch off (also known as the PSTN switch off) is a strategic move by telecommunications providers to phase out traditional copper-based infrastructure, including PSTN and ISDN networks, and replace them with more advanced and flexible technologies such as Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and fiber-optic broadband. This switch off is part of a global trend to embrace digital communication solutions that offer enhanced reliability, scalability, and cost-effectiveness. If you currently use a traditional landline service, you will need to migrate to a VoIP service starting in 2025.
Tel2 is here to help make this process simple for residential customers with the following step by step guide.
Step 1
Find out what services you currently use that require a landline.
Step 2
Decide what type of phone you would like to use moving forward.
Step 3
Purchase the equipment you need for a VoIP service.
Step 4
Sign up for a free trial with Tel2 and test your new service.
Step 5
Port your existing phone number to Tel2 if you desire to keep it.
Step 6
Cancel your traditional service with current provider.
Step 1:
Find out what services you currently use that require a landline
You've reached this guide because you're aware of the upcoming transition from an analog landline telephone service to a VoIP service beginning in 2025. However, it's crucial to also assess other services and equipment dependent on conventional telephone lines for their operation. The three primary residential services that might require updates are:
- Security Systems: Many older security systems are designed to communicate using analog phone lines. While newer security systems often have cellular or internet connectivity options, some older systems may require an analog line for monitoring and alerts. Contact the supplier of your security system to find out whether your security system supports “IP connectivity”.
- Fax Machines: Fax machines have traditionally used analog telephone lines for transmitting documents. While digital faxing services and multifunction printers with email capabilities are becoming more common, some businesses or individuals may still rely on traditional fax machines. Tel2 provide a complementary fax-to-email service which can replace your traditional fax machine.
- Certain Medical Monitoring Devices: Some medical alert systems and monitoring devices for health conditions may be designed to work with analog telephone lines. However, newer systems often have cellular or internet connectivity options. Contact your medical monitoring provider to find our whether you need to make any changes to your service to prepare for the BT Switch Off.
Step 2:
Decide what type of phone you would like to use moving forward
You have the option to keep your current analogue handset by purchasing an Analogue Telephony Adapter (ATA) which converts the analogue signal from your phone to a digital signal that can be used with a VoIP service. Alternatively, you could purchase a new VoIP telephone. Here are the pros and cons of either option:
VoIP Handsets
PROS:
- Enhanced Features: VoIP handsets often come equipped with features such as Adjustable Volume, Advanced Call Management and One-Touch Emergency Buttons.
- Simplified Setup: VoIP handsets are designed to seamlessly integrate with VoIP services, simplifying the setup process and making for easier ongoing maintenance.
- Future-Ready Technology: Investing in VoIP handsets aligns with the direction of the evolving telecommunications landscape. These devices are optimized for the latest communication technologies.
CONS:
Analog Handsets with ATA
PROS
- Cost-Efficiency: Utilizing an ATA with an existing analog handset can be a slightly more cost-effective solution for those looking to migrate from the PSTN.
- Familiarity and Comfort: Users who are accustomed to traditional analog handsets may find it more comfortable and convenient to maintain the familiarity of their existing devices. This can ease the transition process for individuals and businesses.
CONS
- Limited Features: Analog handsets with ATAs may lack some of the advanced features provided by dedicated VoIP handsets. Users may miss out on capabilities offered by VoIP handsets.
- Troubleshooting Challenges: Analog handsets may face compatibility challenges when connected to ATAs. The need to maintain two pieces of equipment instead of one introduces complexities in maintaining your system.
